Saturday April 14th, and much like last year our day started at 9:00am; filling kegs, loading up, coffee… Which lead to the hour and a half drive to Erie, PA for this years Erie Micro Brew Festival.
Saturday 4/16 took me to Erie for the Erie Micro Brew Festival.
The breweries that participated in the event were:
Blue Canoe Brewery, The Brewerie at Union Station, Brooklyn Brewery, East End Brewing Company, Ellicottville Brewing Company, Erie Brewing Company, Flying Dog Brewery, Founders Brewery, Full Pint Brewing Company, Great Lakes Brewing Company, Blue Point Brewing, Lavery Brewing Company, Long Trail Brewing Company, Main Street Grille & Brewing Company, Magic Hat Brewing Company, Marzoni's Brick Oven & Brewing Company, New Holland Brewing, Ohio Brewing Company, Pennsylvania Brewing Company, Rivertowne Pour House, Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery, Rogue Brewery, Rust Belt Brewing Company, Samuel Smith, Shmaltz Brewing Company, Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, Sly Fox Brewery, Southern Tier Brewing Company, Sprague Farm & Brew Works, Thirsty Dog Brewing Company, Timber Creek Tap & Table, Tröegs Brewing Company, Victory Brewing Company, Voodoo Brewery, D.G. Yuengling & Son, Willoughby Brewing Company, Meadville Brewing Society.
We started our with a nice little number by Blue Canoe, ‘Snicker’s Stout. Yup, a stout brewed with actual Snicker’s. Next on my list was to hit the good guys at Voodoo to try their ‘Cowbell’ Chocolate porter. It was a deep, dark, delicious brew. I spent the rest of the afternoon tasting countless beers, and pouring. Got to talk to some pretty amazing people too, it never ceases to amaze me the love we see in Erie!
The location is the super cool, Union (train) Station in Erie, PA, which was expanded to better accommodate the breweries, and the crowds this year. There was also a fairly decent showing from OH in the crowd. Props to all who attended, the staff of the event who went WAY out of their way to accommodate us and the beer drinkers, and the Erie Police who were also super cool to work with again this year.
You really owe it to yourself if you are anywhere near Erie, PA to get out to this event. I can only imagine that insanity that will be 2013. CHEERS!

Disclaimer: this story was written by our new writer, Geoff. I will take a few minutes to introduce him in the near future, but for now, here is his story. We hope you enjoy.
It’s been a mild winter here in Cleveland, but, on the dawn of an event celebrating those wonderful brews, which we brewers design specifically to warm the cockles of our hearts, old man winter appeared in all his miserable and frosty ways. The snow had fallen, the wind had whipped, the temperature had fallen and the stage was appropriately set for a festival of beers featuring the Winter Warmer. What better way to shake off the frost than a couple “Big Boy” beers, conversation with friends, and the warm glow of an engine fire in your Jeep, (thanks Chrysler) but I digress.
On Saturday, February 25th hundreds of beer enthusiasts gathered at Windows on the River in the heart of the Powerhouse to enjoy those high gravity, heavy hitters we all love. Twenty two Breweries from around Ohio converged on the West Bank of the Flats to share their brews including Great Lakes Brewing, Willoughby Brewing, Thirsty Dog, Chardon Brew Works, Hoppin’ Frog Brewery and Black Box Brewing Co. to share their creations with fellow enthusiasts of the craft.
Of all the excellent brews brought for sampling, the following three were those that stood out from the group….
Market Garden Brewery, Cleveland OH; Friar Power Tripel: This was an excellent example of a triple. With a nice light golden color, a slight creamy smoothness to it, and the classic tinge of sweetness at the finish this beer was fantastic.
Columbus Brewing Co., Columbus OH: Bohdi; A typical “West Coast” style IPA, this beer was a very bright yellow gold, with a strong hop nose and initial taste but not overpowering. Citrusy notes mixed with a clean and respectably strong malt backbone made this a great tasting experience.
Elevator Brewing Co., Columbus OH; Espresso Baltic Porter; This black colored Baltic was exactly what the name proclaimed, espresso! A very smooth finish and beautiful head retention, impressively strong but not overpowering coffee flavor made this beer combined with the cleaner fermentation of a Baltic Porter made this brew a personal favorite .
Located in a two level open floor format with a massive wall of windows over looking the Cuyahoga River, this event had everything a beer enthusiast could ask for. Great food, great beer and most importantly great people; this event is going to be a pleaser for years to come. The 6th year of this event has come and gone. Everyone should be looking forward to the 7th.
